I'm arriving at Cal Poly by way of Northwestern University (B.A.), UC Santa Barbara (M.A.) and the University of Pennsylvania (Ph.D.). I've also spent a number of years in the infrared industry, designing and manufacturing infrared imaging systems for commercial and military applications. In industry, we make extensive use of statistical methods, such as for process control, quality assessment and reliability prediction. I hope that examples of successful application of statistics to industrial issues can help enhance students' motivation for studying statistics. While working in industry, I have also lectured in earth science and mathematics at Cal State Channel Islands and in statistics at Cal Poly. As I join the statistics faculty at Cal Poly, I plan to maintain contacts in industry, knowing they will have a never-ending supply of interesting and challenging problems for students of statistics.
